Horse fairs: a modern history

Modern history has taught us how horses used to be irreplaceable for labour and transports, especially before the advent of cars and of even more advanced means of transport. A whole market arose from horses’ importance and grew bigger and bigger over time. Horse fairs, in which breeders and traders used to show potential customers their best horses, were the highest expression of this market.

Progress and change

With the industrial revolution, which transformed western economy from agricultural to industrial, the scenario changed completely: several horse breeds were close to extinction and even the horse breeding sector was highly neglected. Horse fairs, which had been fundamental events in horse-related economy, almost disappeared: only a few, mainly focused on equestrian sports, survived.

America and the Old Continent

A substantial difference could be observed between America and Europe: if horses were widespread and still held an important role overseas, in Europe there was a clear difference between Anglo-Saxon countries, including colonies, and all other countries. Indeed, in the countries under the British crown, as well as in America, horses were seen as intrinsic to history and culture, as they still are.

From machine civilisation to freedom in nature

Nevertheless, the years of the industrial revolution led to a paradox: the very same machine civilisation made horses’ renaissance possible: from animals used for transport and labour, horses became pets and a way to get in touch with nature.

Horses today

From the end of the 1800s on, horses experienced a time of rebirth, also thanks to the idea that the relationship between men and animals was special and unique, that led to a new rise in events dedicated to horses, such as horse fairs. Such fairs aimed and managed to give value to a growing economy and to an expanding sector that had survived many difficulties.

Horse fairs today

Nowadays, there aren’t plenty of horse fairs, but the existing ones differ from those in the past and have a different approach. Today the attention is not only focused on market parameters, which aim at trading horse and horse equipment, but also on equestrian sports and on the importance of horses well-being. Today horses are protagonists of a real revolution in their favour.

Which are Europe’s main horse fairs?

To list our continent’s main equestrian fairs and events, we cannot fail to mention:

  • Fieracavalli Verona (Verona, Italy)
  • Equitana (Essen, Germany)
  • Spoga Horse (Cologne, Germany)
  • Pferd Bodensee (Friedrichshafen, Germania)
  • Elmia Scandinavian Horse Show (Jönköping, Sweden)
  • Hansepferd Hamburg (Hamburg, Germany)
  • Salone del Cavallo Americano (Cremona, Italy)
  • Salon du Cheval de Paris (Paris, France)

Fieracavalli Verona is certainly the horse fair Italians love most. It was established in 1898 and it is the Italian horse fair exhibition par excellence. It takes place annually in November and it is not only an important commercial event, but also a real point of reference for riders and horse lovers.
