Home Unika LAB

a passion for research has always been at the heart of our business

In 2013, UnikaLab, an analysis laboratory dedicated to the quality control of raw materials and end products, the company’s flagship was established. Through major investments, UnikaLab is now able to perform important quantitative and qualitative analyses such as:

• Protein titre study
• Analysis of the amount of crude fibre
• Study of percentages of inorganic substances
• Study of humidity levels
• Percentage analysis of oils and fats
• Search for pollutants
• Search for secondary metabolite titres
• Analysis of equestrian doping

UnikaLab provides the Quality Department with useful information on the characteristics of raw materials purchased and end products manufactured by means of analytical services on samples. In particular, it supports the Quality Department in selecting suppliers on the basis of the purity of raw materials supplied and the Graphics Department in producing the legal labels attached to the end products.

In order to carry out the described analyses, UnikaLab uses official methods and various tools.

Our analyses

Protein titre analysis

UnikaLab uses tools capable of implementing the Dumas method, a very practical and innovative method that guarantees a precise result in just a few minutes, using quantification of the amount of nitrogen. This analysis takes 5 to 10 minutes per sample and can be carried out on both raw materials and compound products.

Protein titres are needed, both to determine the quality of certain raw materials and to determine the quality of the protein content of our finished products

Study of moisture levels

Temperature-controlled ovens are used for moisture analysis, drying samples by evaporating water from their matrix.

The result obtained by weight difference determines the amount of water present in the sample and its dry matter.

Study on the percentage of inorganic substances

Investigation of the levels of inorganic substances present in a product is a fundamental element, required by law for the correct labelling of end products. The analysis allows us to identify the mineral substances contained in the raw materials, thereby preventing possible food fraud.

Analysis of crude fibre content

Crude fibre, a typical component of plant organisms, consists mainly of cellulose and other substances (such as hemicelluloses, lignin, etc.) contained in the plant cell wall. UnikaLab is able to carry out the analysis according to the official Weende method and the fibre fraction methods, according to the official Van Soest methods.

Analysis of the percentage of oils and fats

The analysis of the amount of oils and fats in a sample is crucial for the correct labelling of products. The Soxhlet is the tool used to extract lipids from a test sample. Identifying the percentage of oils and fats allows us to determine the quality of our raw materials and solutions.

High-performance chromatography

This is a technique used to separate two or more compounds in a solution by exploiting the affinity equilibrium between a “stationary phase” within the
chromatographic column and a “mobile phase” flowing through it.

Using a computerised system, chromatograms can be obtained which identify the substances present in the sample and quantify them.

UnikaLab and the focus on equestrian doping

Safety and well-being

UnikaLab has developed a protocol to identify the main pollutants present in plant matrices used in the production chain.

At UnikaLab, we are able to determine contamination by: methylxanthines (theobromine, theophylline, caffeine), hordenine, synephrine, phenylephrine, octopamine, nicotine and harpagosides. These methods allow us to provide professional riders with products that are also controlled from a doping point of view.
