Italy on horseback: the perfect trip for summer 2022

The warmer time of year brings with it a new sensation of freedom and a rediscovered will to travel and get in touch with nature. Fall and winter put those desires to the test, but then, as soon as the first mild weather shows, the organisation of the next trip begins. The last two years have significantly changed several people’s perspective and have underlined how important it is to live one’s life consciously and to acknowledge its fullness and extraordinariness.

And you? Have you already thought about your next trip? And above all: have you ever thought to leave for a horseback trip?

Italy on horseback

Those who are familiar with Unika know very well that to us Horses are true friends, almost family members. Besides our will to maintain their well-being even when they play sport and all the products our R&D department conceives especially for them, we wish the equine world to be a fundamental part of our daily life. And so here we are, with summer at the corner, thinking that travelling through Italy on horseback could be a unique way to discover the Bel Paese, travel, reach places that would otherwise be inaccessible and enjoy being extraordinarily in touch with nature.

A green trip full of wanders

There are so many publications about this kind of itineraries, from trekking on Alps and Dolomites to horseback rides on our wonderful shores. Unika doesn’t wish to take the place of tour operators, but we find the idea of discovering Italy in such a way fascinating; it is absolutely in line with the need of a more and more sustainable mobility and it will be a unique treasure for the soul, we are sure of it.

An itinerary for every region

The whole penisula offers amazing itineraries: from Dolomites to the Brenta river, from Trentino to Veneto, from Piedmont to the Aosta Valley, through Toscany’s hills and the Apenines running through Abruzzo, Molise and Basilicata, horseback tours make us dream…and there are even more itineraries down the path to Salento, which allow you to admire the sea view from Etna’s slopes, or on Sardinia’s uplands.

The tour of Italy on horseback will be an unforgettable source of emotions, sensations and endless discovery for all tastes and needs. From the North to the South, including islands, Italy is full of perfect destinations to arrange a horseback trip and discover unique places: one only need to think of the castles in Emilia Romagna or the WWII streets in Friuli Venezia Giulia. And how could you avoid daydreaming about a trip surrounded by nature in parks, such as the Grand Sasso one or the Aspromonte Park in Calabria?

There are plenty of organised tours where, thanks to experienced guides, you will be allowed to see unspoilt, scenic places, as well as national urban jewels, some of which have been designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Those are magical places in which time seems to have stopped and you would expect to see knights and noblewomen come from nowhere to take a walk by the square: Pienza, Siena, Urbino, San Gimignano and Matera, just to name some.

Tell me what you are looking for and I’ll tell you where to go

Travelling on horseback also means enjoying the slow passage of time, as well as the view of spectacular landscapes, and to choose your itinerary according to your passions and to the natural conformation of our Country.

Do you love food? So why don’t you head to the places that are the cradle of our enogastronomic production and tradition, as well as a symbol of Made in Italy? The vineyards in Piedmont and Tuscany, the itineraries at the discovery of the buffalo mozzarella in Campania, the olive oil mills in Apulia and Umbria, the citrus groves in Sicily or those overhanging the sea of the Amalfi Coast are the perfect destinations!

Are you more of a lake person instead? Then you can’t miss a ride on the shores of lakes Garda or Vico. If you love the sea more, the Tyrrhenian, Ionian and Adriatic shores will amaze you and leave you breathless.

If you take a look closely to an Italian trail map, you’ll easily but surprisingly discover how both the geography and the orography of our regions are perfectly suitable for horseback trips. Each spot you can reach, each landscape you can observe, each peak you can conquer and each shore on which you can take a ride with your horse tell something about our collective history and memory and give foreigners the chance to love Italy in a unique way.

Every region has its own horse breed

Another incredible aspect of the Italian horseback itinerary concerns the horse breeds characterising some regions. For example, Tuscany is the birthplace of the Maremmano breed, while Apulia is the land of Murgese horses and in Sicily you may find horses of an age-old indigenous breed. Indeed, by learning equine history, it is also possible to go back to the most important events in history: from the greatest wars to the battles to conquer castles and towns, from commercial and travel flows to the old-fashioned tales of older generations about which we know very little.

Are you ready to conquer Italy?

Travelling through Italy on horseback may offer you plenty of opportunities and possibilities; a dream grand tour that would be forever fixed in the recesses of your mind. If we managed to arouse your curiosity and you are now ready to leave for your horseback trip, why don’t you pop over or visit our website before leaving, we will be glad to advise you on the best products and nutritional solutions to maintain your travel companion’s well-being.
