Description: Haemofolic is the complementary feed especially conceived to provide horses with vitamins and minerals that help maintain the proper number of red blood cells.

When to use Haemofolic: Administer Haemofolic when a laboratory analysis shows that the horse's red blood cells level is lower than normal. Without a blood test, this condition can be confirmed by the horse's poor resistance to efforts, its difficulty in recovering breath after exercise and its poor competitive performances.

Properties of its constituents: Haemofolic contains an incredibly high concentration of folic acid and vitamin B12, which are the main precursors to the production of red blood cells. Folic acid is a very important B-group vitamin, also known as folate or vitamin B9. It is contained in plants (spinaches, in particular, contain a great amount of it) but its natural chemical form is poorly available for the body (50% of bioavailability) (70). Therefore, food composing horses' rations cannot properly satisfy their needs of folic acid, which is extremely important for the production of red blood cells: that is why, nowadays, it is preferred to supplement horses’ diets with it. It goes the same for vitamin B12, which is completely absent in plants and, therefore, in horses' diets. Vitamin B12, also known as cyanocobalamin is the most chemically complex and rare vitamin of all. Together with folic acid, it is involved in DNA and RNA synthesis and plays an important role in maintaining proper nervous system and metabolism function and proper energy production (60). It is important to bear in mind that proton-pump inhibitors (lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole...) can interfere with vitamin B12 absorption and, therefore, lead to its deficiency (60). Ferrous and cupric chelates of glycine ensure iron and copper great bioavailability. Moreover, Haemofolic contains the extract of the roots of Echinacea purpurea, which is known for its immunostimulant properties. Some Canadian researches show that this plant exerts an effective action on the transportation of oxygen in muscles. In fact, subjects treated with Echinacea purpurea extract showed an improved oxygen transportation, a significant increase in the number and size of their red blood cells and also a rise in the number of their white blood cells, the sentinels of the immune system (72). Moreover, Haemofolic also contains vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in order to improve iron absorption.

Use and dosage: Administer 50-60 g of Haemofolic per day, properly mixed with the daily ration.
