Our wide range of products was missing a section: products for tendon well-being. Several riders, whether they’re athletes or amateurs, are constantly looking for the perfect product to maintain their horses’ tendons physiological well-being when recovering from injuries or to support tendons when joints are put under particular strain.

Indeed, it is not widely known that the term “articular well-being” does not only refer to cartilage conditions, but also to tendons’ ones. Tendons are cartilaginous tissues linking muscles to bones, thus allowing muscle contraction to move the bones across the joint. Sport horses, who face intense training sessions, old or injured horses need to be supplemented with substances supporting their tendons. To this end, Unika has conceived two different products that may be combined to achieve a synergistic action: a complementary feed and a product for external use.

Tendon 10+ is the complementary feed especially conceived for tendons’ well-being. Tendon 10+ is the ultimate solution to this end, for it contains all raw materials known in scientific literature for their beneficial effects on cartilaginous tissues and, therefore, on tendons as well. Unika’s R&D department has been studying and developing Tendon 10+ during the whole 2020 to conceive the ultimate product for tendons. The ingredients listed below are Tendon 10+ true core:

• MSM (methyl sulphonyl methane): it is a source of sulfurated substances playing a role in cartilage formation.
• Glucosamine: it is an amino-monosaccharide and precursor of glycosaminoglycans, which are major components of joint cartilage.
• Chondroitin sulphate: it is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide whose physiological functions are to maintain cartilage elasticity, prevent its degradation and reduce inflammations by decreasing production and inhibiting the activation of mediators of inflammations in cells producing cartilage constituents (chondrocytes) (source: https://www.issalute.it/index.php/la-salute-dalla-a-alla-z-menu/c/condroitina-solfato).
• Hydrolysed collagen: it is one of the constituents of joint cartilage.
• Hyaluronic acid: it is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide belonging to the group of glycosaminoglycans. Our body naturally produce it to hydrate and protect tissues. Hyaluronic acid is also one of the constituents of synovia, which is found inside joints and whose purpose is to protect cartilage from wear and tear and mechanical stress.
• Devil’s claw (Harpagophytumprocumbens): it is an African plant that is well-known in popular medicine for its beneficial effects on the articular system.

• Vitamin C: it plays a fundamental role in collagen synthesis.

During 2020, Unika’s R&D efforts have not only been focused on developing Tendon 10+, but also on conceiving Tendon Gel, a product for external use especially created for tendons’ well-being. It is based on ozonated sunflower oil, mint essential oil and Arnica montana, and it is conceived as a daily massage gel aiming at helping horses’ joints withstand continuous stress due, for example, to intense training sessions or competitions.   Since it is obtained by ozonisation, a process translating in the addition of ozone (O₃) to sunflower oil, ozonated sunflower oil is a source of active oxygen: therefore, Tendon Gel can facilitate tissue reoxygenation. Consequently, Tendon Gel is perfect:

• on competition days;
• during periods of intense training;
• after work;
• in case of tendon or articular injuries.
